New Original Breed – Tally Cob!

Tally Cob

HF recently approved a brand-new original breed, the Tally Cob! Created by Odeon of Gunslinger Inc., the breed is heavy cob in type, blending Gypsy Cob, Norman Cob, Thoroughbred, Irish Draught or Irish Sport Horse.

For the official thread, please visit that at the HF forum here. If you are interested in created your own Original Breed, please read the rules regarding that here.

The Tally Cob
Created by Odeon in 2021

Conformation & Temperament

Tally Cobs fall into two categories, based on height.

Heavyweights standing between 14.3hh and 15.2hh, displaying a minimum of 9 1/2 inches of bone
Maxi standing at or above 15.3hh, displaying a minimum of 9 1/2 inches of bone and ideally with a maximum height of 16 – 16.1hh.

All Tally Cobs should be animals of “cob” type, short-legged and displaying substance and good, flat bone that is capable of carrying substantial weight. Tally Cobs should have generous but attractive heads (with roman noses permissible), a large, kind eye and a well-muscled and balanced neck. They should have a strong hind end and well defined wither and clean, strong hocks with short cannons and good feet. They should have strong knees, and be close to the ground, with “a leg in each corner”. Like many horses of cob type, they colloquially should have the “head of a lady and the backside of a cook”. Their movement should be low, comfortable and “workmanlike”, displaying attributes sought after in a good hunter. Tally Cobs are not expected to move like lightweight hunters, and should not display too high a knee action, but instead have balanced, ground covering gaits. The shoulder should slope, as upright shoulders are more suited to carriage work and a good length of rein and depth of girth.

Tally Cobs should be well mannered and steady animals, ideal for the young, novice and elderly riders. They should be balanced and safe, the sort of horse that could carry any member of the family.

Turn Out

Tally Cobs should be shown hogged with a pulled tail, and head and legs trimmed of hair. Tack should resemble that of a well turned out show hunter, with plain black or brown leather.

Disciplines

Tally Cobs are bred to be good working hunters for the whole family. They should ideally be shown in working hunter classes between 2’6″ and 2’9″, or in show hunter or hunter hack classes either astride or sidesaddle. Tally Cobs are a heavier breed, and riders should keep in mind that they are not designed for high-level competition in other disciplines as they may lack some of the dexterity displayed by lighter warmblooded breeds. Tally Cobs may be shown in English disciplines besides hunter classes, but please keep in mind that these horses should not be PSG dressage horses or grand prix show jumpers. In addition, Tally Cobs should not be shown in driving, or western classes, lacking the conformation attributes needed for this kind of showing.

Breeding

  • “Foundation Breed” refers to the breeds that make up the Tally Cob, in this case the Gypsy Cob, Norman Cob, Thoroughbred, Irish Draught or Irish Sport Horse
  • “First Generation” – A Tally Cob whose parents are Gypsy Cobs/Norman Cobs or Irish Sport Horses. Should be 50% Gyspy and/or Norman 25% Thoroughbred and 25% Irish Draught
  • “Pure” – A Tally Cob whose parents are also Tally Cobs

Tally Cobs have a “first” generation and subsequent “pure” generations. The initial cross should subsist of:

  • 50% Gypsy/Irish Cob or Norman Cob
  • 25% Irish Draught
  • 25% Thoroughbred

This is considered a “First Generation” Tally Cob.

Crossing a Gypsy or Norman Cob to a Irish Sport Horse is ideal and recommended as an initial cross, however breeds should ensure that the Irish Sport Horses used are traditional (Thoroughbred crosses only) and not modern (Warmblood crosses are not permissible) and maintain a 50/50 mix of Thoroughbred and Irish Draught breeding.

A “pure” Tally Cob is achieved by breeding Tally Cob to Tally Cob. These horses should always maintain a minimum of 25% Irish Draught, 25% Thoroughbred and any mix of Gypsy/Irish and Norman Cob to account for the other 50%.

Acceptable Colours & Patterns

Tally Cobs are permitted to be any of the colours, dilutions and patterns seen in their parent breeds. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Pearl and creme dilutions, including double dilutes
  • Dun and roan
  • Tobiano and Sabino
  • Dominant White patterns including W2, W5, W6, W7, W20 and W22
  • Appaloosa/Lp and PATN

Overo and homozygous Lp horses are discouraged, to avoid instances of lethal white and night-blindness in resulting offspring.

Association Eligibility

Tally Cobs with at least 25% Gypsy Cob blood are eligible to show in partbred classes with the TGCA.

Approval Process

At this stage there are no approval processes required prior to breeding your own Tally Cob, as long as breed percentages are adhered to. Classes at official shows will be offered for both “first” generation and “pure” Tallys.

Classlist:

  • As this breed is in its infancy, classes designated “Tally Cob” are open to both First Generation and Pure Tally Cobs. As the breed grows, these classes will be split.
  • Classes for “Heavyweights” are for Tally Cobs between 14.3hh and 15.2hh
  • Classes for “Maxis” are for Tally Cobs 15.3hh and above (ideal maximum 16 – 16.1hh)
  • Tally Cobs should be shown in acceptable Tally turnout with hogged manes and heads and legs trimmed of hair.
  • No stallions should be shown in ladies sidesaddle classes
  • Hunter horses should enter both the over fences and under saddle components of their chosen level. In addition they may also enter a suitable hunter hack class.
  • Ladies Sidesaddle hunters should not cross-enter into astride hunter classes.
